Sen. Graham: 'Real Likelihood' Dems Could Take the House in Midterms

The “real likelihood” of a midterm blue wave in the House could give Democrats more than enough seats to hold the majority, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., warned Wednesday.

In comments to The New York Times, Graham shared a bleak view of midterm races in which Republicans can afford to lose only 22 seats over all to maintain even a one-seat majority.

“There’s a real likelihood that they not only will win the House, but they win it by 10 or 12 more seats than they need,” Graham told the Times.

Still, a Democratic takeover isn’t a sure thing, Graham said.

“In the era of Trump, things can change in 24 hours, for good or bad,” he said.

But any Republican in even a remotely competitive district could face a tough general election, he added.

“We’re bleeding among women and the enthusiasm factor for Democrats is worth 7 or 8 points, and sometimes more,” he told the Times.

“If I was a House guy in an R+10 or less seat I’d be getting on the phone and raising money and putting a sign on my dog,” he said, using political jargon to describe just how deep into Republican territory the battlefield might stretch.

The comments came a day after Republicans faced a tough special election in Ohio's 12th Congressional District for a long GOP-held seat.

The seat, which covers a district President Donald Trump won by 11 points in 2016, was too close to call, jarring Republicans and boosting Democrats hoping to take back control of Congress in the midterms. They will need to flip 23 seats in November’s elections to do so, The Hill noted.
