The Morning Consult found that all ten of the country’s most popular governors are Republicans. After I noted it on Twitter, a few people suggested that wasn’t surprising given how many of the country’s governors are Republicans.
There are 33 Republican governors. So the probability that the most popular governor in America would be a Republican is 33/50. The probability that the second most popular governor would also be a Republican is 32/49, and the joint probability would be (33/50) * (32/49). Extending that method, I calculated that the chance that all ten of the most popular governors would be Republicans just based on their dominance of governorships at 0.9 percent.
I checked the math with a few people who were not history majors, and they agreed.
